We originally refered to the beasts, birds, and all animals as the Critters 'n Things.
It was an affectionate way of referring to those gifts from God that we barely knew or understood. But we did know this much--they were here first and our plans for a church and a parish population was about to disturb decades of inter-relationship. Under land stewardship models tht means that the critters deserve attention, protection and planning to assure their presence and render all interaction between the human and animal as safe
You know what they say, "You can't tell the players without a program," So here you go; An inventory of what birds and mammals and fish and other creature share their space with us. All things large and small, all things bright and beautiful.
It pleases God to have snakes in the Garden. Especially this beautiful, non-poisonous black racer which more often than not sees you before you see it.
One of the first friendly greetings the Land Stewardship Committee received was from a gray fox, seen here standing atop the firepit. The female fox was a regular visitor and within the year it was discovered she wasn't visiting at all. She had a den on the property. The first year she had three babies and the next year she had one and the year following two. Watching the fox and family hunt and play was an early reward for the Land Stewardship members. "Fox Green" is an area on the grounds named for the location the fox used most often.
